Artist Guest of Honor Jenn DePaola (Dee-Pay-Oh-La)
Greetings! I’m Jenn, a digital artist who specializes in Illustration, Portraiture, and Pinups with a penchant for the geeky side. I’m a local artist and grew up in Roanoke, VA where I reside with my husband and our two kitties.
Fantasy and Science Fiction have always played a large role in my life; it fascinated me and captivated my imagination. In the mid 90’s I was introduced to the world of digital art and design and I absolutely fell in love with it. That’s where the next leg of my artistic studies began. I am a self-taught artist and learned to draw and paint through observation, trial and error, and of course lots of practice. I gather inspiration from many artists both traditional and digital, new and old. And that inspiration has continually fueled my passion for creating new art.
In the past I have done work for Topps Trading Cards on licensed Star Wars sketch cards, as well as their first Mars Attacks! sketch card set. More recently I have been working on commissions creating custom artwork for clients. When not working on commissions, I am creating new artwork and designs for my own product lines and online shops.
I’ve been working, writing, and producing for public radio since 2006 ever since I discovered that DC has No Food. That commentary, my first for WAMU 88.5’s Metro Connection, won Best of the Year and started my journey down the cobblestone path. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and interview many incredible people from Muppets and Jedis to Nobel Prize Winners and political leaders. Mind you, it’s not always the celebrity interview that sticks with you, often it’s the little stories like the one about foster parents who bring into their lives medically fragile children or a synagogue that arranged a mission to Cuba to restore a lost Jewish heritage to a population hungry to regain what was lost. Sometimes though, it’s just the absurd: performance artists that dress up as shrubbery or scientific studies that look at the behaviors of drunk fruit flies.
But it’s not all news. I’ve seen several of my plays hit the New York stage, have seen my novels on book shelves, and my paintings exhibited in galleries and homes. This website will hopefully be a place where we can wonder and wander. I hope that you will be a part of many conversations. Please feel free to read, listen, view and most importantly comment.
I hope you travel with me along this path. I’m excited to discover where it leads.
